A rainbow flag will fly over the town hall on Saturday as the council shows it’s support for the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHOT).

The council has a proud LGBT heritage and recently made history by conducting some of the country’s first ever gay marriages at the Town Hall.

Throughout this week staff have been showing their support by wearing the distinctive orange ribbons bearing the words “Zero Tolerance, Stop Homophobia”, in the build up to the big day on May 17.

Lesley Seary, chief executive of Islington Council, said: “The Council has a proud LGBT heritage and has been at the forefront of advancing gay rights.

“However, despite significant progress, the battle against homophobia and transphobia is not yet won.

“Islington’s diversity is one of its greatest strengths and we are committed to tackling discrimination and addressing inequality in all that we do.”
