Made in Islington: Trident Pottery, Caledonian Road

Every week, we take to the streets to unearth something being manufactured right here in Islington. This week, we found a small shop in the Cally has been making ceramics for 38 years.
Caledonian Road is not the first place you would associate with pottery production.
But Trident Pottery, at the Cally’s King’s Cross end, is still going strong after 38 years.
In 1978, Valerie Rees lived in the flat above when the shop became vacant – and she put her pottery college course to use.
All ceramics are made in the shop, typically a two-week production process involving a pot wheel, glazing and stonewear for durability.
She said: “I make stuff that I know will sell well in the shop. Mainly simple items that people like to use in the home, such as dishes, plates and teapots.
“I also take orders that customers want for special occasions like weddings.
“People have been very loyal over the years – they keep on coming back. It’s very touching.”
