The strike, which took place between 6.30pm and 12.30am, was the eighth period of industrial action by the Fire Brigade Union (FBU) since September 25,

The firefighters were striking as part of a dispute between the FBU and the government over reforms to Firefighters’ Pension Scheme, with the raising of the retirement age a key issue.

The strike also coincides with plans to close stations across London including Clerkenwell Station in Farringdon Road which will shut this month.

MP Jeremy Corbyn gave up his New Years plans to be at the station in Hornsey Road.

He said: “The fire service keep us safe all the year round and do a marvelous job and I’m alarmed that we’re losing Clerkenwell.

“They’re also facing a big attack on their pensions – we don’t want people my age having to run in to burning buildings to save people.

“The strikes are part of a campaign to change these government reforms on the retirement age.”
