Reports of a sexual assault caused Newington Green to be closed by police on Tuesday.

People were kept awake by the Metropolitan Police helicopter hovering overhead and found the green, which is bordered by Newington Green Road, taped off by police forensics teams when they woke up.

Officers confirmed that the force’s serious offences, exploitation and child abuse command had attended after an allegation was made of a sexual assault on a woman at 1.15am on Tuesday.

Police said that the allegation was later withdrawn.

Earlier this week, a father and son walk through an Islington park. They see a man with a loaf of bread, feeding ducks in a pond. The boy is curious. The father asks the man if his son can take a slice. They get chatting. The bread man asks the father where he is from. Syria, he replies. He is one of a handful of refugees to have recently fled the turmoil of his home country to make a new home in Islington.
