Archant

Here in Islington, we are used to creative forms of protest outside the town hall. In September, for instance, Sotheby Mews Day Centre campaigners rallied with their own version of Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick In The Wall”.

Before last night’s council meeting, the tenants of Burnhill House were even more imaginative. They played a game of football.

They were highlighting their opposition to Islington’s redevelopment plans for Finsbury Leisure Centre next door, which would lead to reduced pitch space.

But as reported in the Gazette, they are also concerned the plans, which also include 120 news homes, would block out Burnhill House from the surrounding area.

Inside the council chamber, tenant Marianna Johnson quizzed housing leader Cllr Diarmaid Ward about progress on the plans, but was instead given a basic overview of the proposals.

She said after the meeting: “The reply barely referred to anything I asked. It was evasive and ambiguous at best. We have been marginalised and ignored in this whole process.”
