A further furore has erupted over the number of applications for a planned free school.

Whitehall Park School is set to open in September on the former Ashmount site – a plan mired in controversy since Ashmount announced its plan to move into £16.5million new premises.

Islington Council wants to use the site for housing and says the extra school places are not needed, while the owners claim the new school is popular with parents and its entry year is oversubscribed.

But a Freedom of Information (FOI) request submitted by a campaigner against the new school has shown that there have only been 72 applications for places at the Bellvue Education run school.

The previous school catered for more than 300, but the Ashmount Site Action Group (ASAG) contests that a council plan to use half of the site for housing would mean the children would not have enough space to play.
