Ten fire engines and 72 firefighters attended a fire in a hotel yards from the former Clerkenwell fire station.

The fire, which started during the Fire Brigade Union (FBU) strike on Saturday, affected four rooms at Apart Hotel in Rosebery Avenue and part of the building’s roof was also damaged by the blaze.

Emergency Fire Contingency Crews were called at 4.13pm and the fire was not under control until 7.50pm.

London Fire Brigade (LFB) took over from the contingency crews at 5pm following the end of the seven hour strike.

Nobody was injured in the fire, but the hotel remains closed with no re-opening date set.

Crews from Stoke Newington, Euston, Kentish Town, Whitechapel, Shoreditch, West Hampstead, Holloway, Islington, Soho and Paddington fire stations were at the scene.

They used Clerkenwell fire station, which was closed in January under Boris Johnson’s cuts to the service, as a base for the engines.

The station is now being marketed to private investers.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
