Archant

Amy Andrew overcame a bout of flu – and some controversial judging – to clinch victory for Islington BC in their team match in Jersey.

Andrew, who took on Calli Bushell of Jersey Leonis ABC at 57kg, edged a countback split decision that appeared more clear-cut, but nevertheless sealed a 3-1 win for the north London club.

Catching Bushell with a series of single jabs to take the opening round of four, Andrew switched off in the second but recovered as she forced her opponent onto the back foot.

Despite that, the judges scored the third round in the home fighter’s favour and it needed sustained pressure and some telling combinations in the closing stages for Andrew to emerge victorious.

Islington team manager Reggie Hagland said: “To Amy’s credit, she participated while not 100 per cent fit – she has incredible determination and character.

“It was a wonderful experience for our boxers. The hospitality from the Jersey team was excellent and hopefully we are able to take part in more contests in the Channel Islands in the near future.”

Debutant Byron Cox, 18, was first into the ring for Islington in a youth contest at 58kg against another first-timer, Alex Power (Jersey Leonis).

Cox worked well on the front foot and put his opponent under pressure as he controlled all three rounds – and, despite an original announcement in favour of Power, the show supervisor confirmed the Islington boxer’s win by unanimous decision.

Islington fielded another debutant in the next fight, Tommy Kavulu, but he started slowly and found himself under pressure from Harry Bertam (Jersey Leonis ABC).

Stern words from corner man Darren Smith seemed to spark Kavulu into action and he landed cleaner punches in the second round but, after an untidy climax to the fight, it was Bertam who took a unanimous decision.

Islington’s Borys Feldman finally broke his lengthy habit of winning split decisions as he gained a unanimous verdict from the judges against the previously undefeated Nick Carpenter (Jersey Leonis ABC).

Feldman’s front foot pressure and head movement kept him comfortably in control, and the welterweight’s delight was evident when the judges all went in his favour.

Islington’s Ella Gilbert was defeated on her debut for the club in a hard-fought contest against K Wawman (St Gerards ABC) at Millwall FC Supporters’ Club.

The pair traded blows during the first and third rounds, which were both close, but Wawman’s better scoring head shots and quickfire jabs in the second helped her to clinch victory.
