Islington BC duo Malachi Borrel and Alfy Andrews warmed up for the Junior England Championships with victories on the club’s Easter trip to Bavaria.

Borrel, a student at St Aloysius’ College, and Andrews both produced strong performances to overcome opponents from host club Landau BC as they prepare for the forthcoming tournament.

From the start of his Under-64kg contest against Andreas Spannbauer, Borrel looked slick, catching his opponent with straight shots throughout to take a unanimous decision.

Andrews, boxing at Under-57kg against Markus Kurz, showed a full array of skills with fast hands and good footwork as he stayed on the outside and claimed a unanimous points verdict.

Islington’s team captain Jeff Ofori was also victorious, dominating his light-welterweight clash with Arthur Rung and forcing a standing eight count in the second round before winning by technical knockout in the last.

Sherif ‘The Sandman’ Musah started slowly in his Under-86kg contest against Konstanin Fillativ before unleashing a series of head and body attacks as the home boxer took a standing eight count in the final round and lost by unanimous decision.

Islington handed two seniors their debuts, with Jack Rowe boxing well at long range in his Under-81kg bout with Domenic Wagner, only to suffer a surprising defeat on a majority verdict.

The other newcomer, Kenyon Reid, struggled to deal with the two-hand attacks of Jaweed Homayon in their Under-71kg clash, ducking under with dangerous use of the head and was eventually disqualified after three public warnings.

Around 400 spectators watched the show and Islington chairman Lenny Hagland said: “It was an excellent trip and the hospitality was first class. We hope to host Landau in a rematch some time next season.”
