Kent edged the first day of their County Championship Division Two clash with promotion rivals Middlesex at Lord’s.

A total of 19 wickets fell as the hosts were dismissed for 161, before Kent closed on 189-9.

James Fuller (3-47), Ethan Bamber (2-30), Steve Finn (2-55) and Middlesex debutant Martin Andersson (2-52) shared the wickets to fall, the latter after a last-minute call-up to the side.

Andersson said: “I got a call about 10pm last night (Suynday) to say expect a call in the morning as I might be playing for Middlesex.

“So, I woke up at 6.30am, got the call and had to make the two-hour journey from Northamptonshire (where Derbyshire are playing this week).

“I was patchy (with the ball), happy with the two wickets I took, but not how I bowled in the middle of my spell. I’ll take it as a first day with Middlesex.

“I think we would have taken their 189-9 at the beginning of their innings, but from 53-6 we’d have hoped for more.”

Darren Stevens (64) and Grant Stewart (60 not out) helped Kent recover, after Fuller (37 not out) and Finn (27) had top-scored for the home side earlier in the day.

Stevens (4-44) and Harry Podmore (3-35) were the pick of the Kent bowling.
