Middlesex man Dawid Malan could also make Test debut in game at the Oval

Essex batsman Tom Westley will make his England Test debut in the third Test against South Africa, which starts next Thursday.

Though there is still a week to go before the match begins at the Oval on July 27, England selectors have confirmed that Westley, who has scored 478 runs at an average of 53.11 in this year’s County Championship, will bat at number three.

The 28-year-old will join Essex team-mate Alastiar Cook in the side and replaces Yorkshire’s Gary Ballance, who has been ruled out with a broken finger.

There could also be a chance for Middlesex man Dawid Malan to make his Test debut, having been named in the 13-man squad.

Malan impressed for the national T20 side last month when making his debut against South Africa, top scoring with 78 to be named man of the match.

Fellow Middlesex player Toby Roland-Jones has also been named in the squad, but looks set to miss out on starting the Test.

England squad for third Test: Joe Root (Yorkshire, captain), Moeen Ali (Worcestershire), James Anderson (Lancashire), Jonny Bairstow (Yorkshire), Stuart Broad (Nottinghamshire), Alastair Cook (Essex), Liam Dawson (Hampshire), Keaton Jennings (Durham), Dawid Malan (Middlesex), Toby Roland-Jones (Middlesex), Ben Stokes (Durham), Tom Westley (Essex), Mark Wood (Durham).
