Bamber achieved the remarkable figures of 4-9 in just 6.2 overs while Nick Brand took 5-50 as Hornsey were skittled for 104 – falling 77 runs short.

North Midd have now won seven of their last nine games and are sitting pretty in fourth place.

But Hornsey need to beat Richmond at home on Saturday and hope relegation rivals Finchley don’t get more than a point against Teddington – who have already secured the title – to avoid the drop.

North Midd captain Tom Nicoll said: “The man of the match was young Ethan Bamber, who was simply unplayable. Ethan is another product of our academy system and we will be seeing a lot more of this lad.”

Nicoll lost his 13th toss out of 17 league matches, being asked to bat, and opener Connor Nurse fell for a duck, while Middlesex CCC professional Joe Denly (17) was removed by Martin Tucker (4-57), leaving the hosts 25-2.

But Michael Clements and Adam Holmes added 102 for the third wicket, with Clements (70) notching up his highest league score of the season and Holmes (47) providing the perfect foil.

Holmes’ dismissal sparked a mini-collapse as Nicoll fell to his first ball – and Clements and Joel Hughes (8) soon followed.

John Mills (14) and Will Nicoll (18) added 29 valuable runs for the seventh wicket, but the last three wickets fell for no runs as Hornsey fought back, bowling out their local rivals for 181 in just 55 overs.

James Bull (18) and Garfield Struthers (16) got the Hornsey innings off to a promising start, but Brand removed Bull and Michael Philipson (4).

Debutant Bamber then got in on the act with the wickets of former Middlesex professional Paul Weekes (5) and Richard Wharton (0) as Hornsey slumped to 36-4.

Brand and Bamber continued to work their way down the order, with assistance from Denly (1-19), and after just 24 overs the score was a sorry-looking 66-9.

Tucker hit 32 off just 26 balls to take Hornsey past the 100 mark, but Bamber trapped him lbw to secure the victory in after 30.2 overs.

Tom Nicoll added: “This was a very strong all-round performance which showed our strength in depth.”
