New signing William Russell proved his worth immediately with an unbeaten half-century to clinch Highgate’s first win of the campaign in Division Three of the Middlesex County Cricket League.

The Australian all-rounder returned figures of 3-20 to wrap up the Barnes innings for 178 and then shone with the bat as well, hitting 79 not out as Highgate swept to a seven-wicket victory.

Barnes began well, reaching 84-1 before they were pegged back by Craig Gourlay (3-29) and William Brookes (3-28) and lost five wickets for just 23 runs.

Tom Harwood (30) and George Harris (36) mounted a recovery, but both eventually fell to Russell as he and Gourlay cleaned up the innings in the 49th over.

Russell and captain Jake Sharland (28) gave Highgate a strong platform in pursuit of their target before the skipper was caught off Vikash Mohan (2-29).

Although Mohan also disposed of Chris Arul (20) and Ed Atkins made just two before he was bowled by Alex Scott, Russell remained to seal victory in an unbroken partnership of 66 with Ben Sudell (41 not out) as Highgate reached 181-3.
