A devastating bowling display from Michael Philipson and Oli Yew gave Hornsey their first victory of the season in the Middlesex County Cricket League as they thumped high-flying Ealing by seven wickets.
Ealing finished second in the Premier Division last season and were joint top at the start of play – as they still are now – while Hornsey went into the game winless.
However, captain Philipson (5-20) and Yew (4-5) demolished the visitors’ batting line-up in Crouch End, skittling them for 65, and Philipson’s unbeaten 33 helped his side to reach their target with just three wickets down.
Philipson won the toss and inserted Ealing, who made a steady start and reached 22 without loss before suffering regular setbacks.
The skipper got the first three wickets, bowling opener Mylo Wilkin (10) and then snaring Luke Stoughton (1) and David Holt (2) leg before to leave the visitors 30-3.
Middlesex wicketkeeper Adam Rossington stumped Chris Glasper (9) off the bowling of Martin Tucker (1-20), and Yew then joined the party, dismissing Kristian Martin and Huw Jones for ducks.
Opener Ahmad Elech (18) had remained at the crease but he was also stumped by Rossington after a delivery from Philipson, who immediately bowled his opposing captain Chris Peploe for a golden duck.
Yew quickly finished off the tail, removing Robert White (5) and Jack Sheppard (0) to finish his remarkable 7.3 overs with three maidens and four wickets at the expense of just five runs.
Hornsey were left with the seemingly simple task of chasing a target of 66, but they suffered some early scares as Will Notley was caught for a duck off his fourth ball and Chris Glasper (2-10) removed Jack Goldberg (7) and James Bull (2).
That left Hornsey 19-3, but they suffered no further losses as Philipson (33 not out) and James Fleming 18no) knocked off the required runs and took the hosts over the line after 20.5 overs.
