North Middlesex teen Ethan Bamber made his Middlesex debut on Sunday and picked up his maiden first-class wicket

Joel Hughes spoke of his pride after North Middlesex youngster Ethan Bamber made his County Championship debut on Sunday and then talked up the prospect of another teenager at the local club representing his county soon.

Bamber, 19, was selected by Middlesex for the first time for their Division Two game at Northamptonshire and claimed 1-68 from 18 overs – dismissing the hosts’ centurion Ricardo Vasconcelos for his maiden first-class wicket.

It was a proud moment for the teenager and his club side North Middlesex and a day earlier, on Saturday, the Park Road outfit were being inspired to victory by another promising player in the form of 17-year-old Luke Hollman.

Hollman, an England under-19 international and Middlesex second-teamer, took 5-16 to help dismiss Shepherds Bush for 104 in the Middlesex County League Premier Division and inspire North Middlesex to a 45-run success after top scoring with 60.

Captain Hughes said: “We are really chuffed for Ethan, making his County Championship debut and getting an important wicket.

“He’s buzzing and after Luke’s performance on Saturday – a classy 60 and 5-16 – he won’t be far behind too.”

All-rounder Hollman showed his potential with a superb display last weekend to guide North Middlesex to another win.

Hughes won the toss and batted first, but saw his side struggle from the off as they were quickly reduced to 52-4.

Opener Hollman stood firm, however, and scored an excellent 60 off only 79 balls to help them reach 149 all out in the 37th over.

The next best score was 17 by Evan Flowers while skipper Hughes ended unbeaten on 13 off 41 balls.

In the field, North Middlesex’s captain made an early breakthrough and claimed 1-25 while Hugh Teesdale chipped in with 1-20.

Alfie Duke (1-20) and Will Vanderspar (1-22) also contributed before Hollman took centre stage and ended with 5-16 off seven overs to dismiss Bush for 104.

Hughes added: “Luke was a level above. On a wicket that everyone else struggled on, he made it look easy.

“Our thirds also won the league on Saturday and we’re very proud to have seen both our second and third-teams win their respective titles.”
