Arsenal’s experienced Stephan Lichtsteiner has been speaking ahead of the club’s opening Europa League match of the season against FC Vorskla Poltava. Read on for Layth Yousif’s report from London Colney on Wednesday afternoon.

The former Juventus right-back signed on a free transfer from the Serie A giants in the summer has seen his chances limited in the role by first choice Hector Bellerin.

The 34-year-old Swiss internatioal who captained his country at this summer’s World Cup in Russia only appeared as a substitute in the opening match of the season during the 2-0 home defeat by Manchester City.

The former Lazio player has an impressive CV, winning the Scudetto seven times with Juve and playing Champions League football – and is hungry to get back into the continent’s top tier trophy with Arsenal.

Speaking at London Colney after training on Wednesday ahead of the clash with the side from the Ukraine in North London he said: “I am hungry to get back to the Champions League.

“But it is a long way and we have two chances – the UEFA Cup and the Premier League. We want to try as I am sure we want to play Champions League next year.

“One thing I learned with Juventus is to have respect for each competition. In the last four or five years with Juventus, we tried to play for all the titles, for all the trophies.

“While the Italian Cup wasn’t that important beforehand, we started to play for it with the best team possible.

“I think in football you have to respect all the trophies.

“Of course the Champions League is a more glamorous title, but the Europa League is a really good chance for the team, for the club and all the players to win this nice trophy. I think for that we have to respect all teams in all competitions to give all games 100 per cent.”
