Arsenal head coach Unai Emery has been speaking after their 2-0 home defeat by Manchester City on Sunday. Read Layth Yousif’s report from the new man’s first post-match press conference at the Emirates.

Emery analysed his side’s 2-0 loss to Pep Guardiola’s City on Sunday by admitting the Premier League champions were worthy winners.

A first half goal from Raheem Sterling followed by an excellent left-footed strike by Bernardo Silva on 64 minutes sealed the victory for the reigning holders.

Arsenal started well, pressing and harrying City, but Guardiola’s men absorbed the early pressure and eased their way to ascendancy.

However, the former PSG boss took positives from the loss, praising his team.

Speaking after the match he said: “There was a good ambience here with our supporters... [City] deserved this result...today City demanded our best performance.

“I am happy with the players because they ran and [showed] fight.

“This 90 minutes [showed] the spirit I want [but] we need to improve.

“Manchester City are working for five years with Guardiola. They have a team with stability, playing how they want - and we are starting.”

Emery was also asked his view on Cech after the 46-year-old Gunners boss opted for the former Chelsea goalkeeper to start ahead of summer signing Bernd Leno.

Cech was at fault for the opener after remaining rooted to the spot as Sterling’s curling shot flew into the net.

But Emery defended his keeper, saying: “Cech had a very good pre-season and today he played good also.

“He has this experience for defending our goal. Leno is starting with us, he’s working very well and played well in pre-season but he can wait for his moment.

“For us, it is about sticking together, even when we have setbacks. We must remain grounded when we win and united when we don’t.”

Emery added the medical team would assess Ainsley Maitland-Niles ahead of his sidde’s trip to Chelsea on Saturday after the versatile 20-year-old went off injured before half-time to be replaced by Stephan Lichtsteiner.

Opposing manager Guardiola refused to be drawn on Emery, saying ‘he is a fighter [but] I am not the man to offer him advice.’
