Arsenal have completed the signing of striker Pierre Emerick Aubameyang Borussia Dortmund have confirmed. The Gabon forward joined for a fee believed to be £56 million on a three year deal. Read on for ten facts about the North Londoner’s star striker.
Gunning down Spurs
Aubameyang is yet to pull on an Arsenal shirt but his record against Tottenham Hotspur should already endear him to the Gunners faithful.
In four games for Dortmund against Spurs, the Gabonese striker has netted four goals, including a brace at White Hart Lane in the Europa League back in 2016.
The striker’s recent comments to the Sun will also make him an instant hit with the Arsenal faithful.
Aubameyang spoke of his admiration of Arsene Wenger and the Gunners invincible team of 2003/04, saying “Players my age spent our teenage years admiring the amazing team Mr Wenger put together and the things they won.”
Gabon goals galore
The 28-year-old is Gabon’s joint all time leading scorer with 23 goals.
Aubameyang is currently tied with Théodore Nzue Nguema, a retired striker who played for French side Angers.
The former Borussia Dortmund man equalled Nguema’s tally in 14 less caps.
Aubameyang’s international career could have been very different though.
Born in France, the striker made one appearance for the countries U21 side in 2009 but chose to represent his nation of heritage in Gabon.
Before his appearance for the French youth side, he was approached by the Italian FA about playing for the country’s U19 side having grown up in the country, but he rejected the offer.
Aubameyang was also eligible to play for Spain through his mother.
It’s a family affair
Why did he choose Gabon over three top European nations?
His father, Pierre, captained the African country during the 1990s – helping them to two African Cup of Nations tournaments – with this being key to Pierre-Emerick’s choice.
His two elder brothers, Willy and Catilina have also represented the nation.
All three signed for AC Milan in their early careers thanks to their father’s role as a scout with the Italian giants.
Catilina is the only one of the three to make an appearance for the club.
His club career could also have been very different.
Newcastle United were desperate to sign Aubameyang in the summer 2012 but he decided to reject the Magpies and remain at Saint-Etienne in France.
Just 12 months later, he was being linked with St. James’ Park again but when an offer from Borussia Dortmund came in, he decided on a move to German rather than the North East.
Super hero celebrations
The 28-year-old is a huge fan of comic books and has incorporated that love into some of his goal celebrations.
While with Saint-Etienne he donned a Spiderman mask after scoring for Les Verts, while he and Marco Reus wore Batman and Robin mask after Aubameyang scored for Dortmund against Schalke in the Ruhr derby.
It’s no secret that players like multiple pairs of boots for games but, in 2013 Aubameyang decided to take that a step further.
During the warm up for a Ligue 1 game between Saint-Etienne and Lyon, the striker worn a pair of Swarovski crystal encrusted Nike boots, worth £2,500.
Let’s hope he didn’t ruin them.
Quicker than Bolt?
Premier League defences will be terrified of Aubameyang’s pace when they read this.
Although not official, Borussia Dortmund claim that the 28-year-old sprinted 30 metres in 3.7 seconds at a training camp in 2013.
When Usain Bolt ran his world record 9.58 seconds in the 100m sprint at the 2009 World Championships in Berlin, he completed 30 metres 0.08 seconds slower than Aubameyang.
Arsenal record breaker
Aubameyang will break a record as soon as steps onto the pitch for Arsenal as the striker will become the first ever Gabonese player to represent the Gunners.
