Arsene Wenger admitted Arsenal have a 90 per cent chance of finishing second in their Champions League qualifying group after his team were held 2-2 in a game of fluctuating fortunes at The Emirates tonight.

Despite an Olivier Giroud penalty right on half time and a Marco Verratti own goal on the hour mark putting the Gunners 2-1 up, an Alex Iwobi own goal which deflected a header from Edinson Canvani past David Opsina saw PSG make it 2-2 – following an 18th minute opener from the Uruguayan.

Yet with both sides on 11 points, and with the Londoners having a better goal difference by three, the Parisians now top the group by dint of having a better header to head between the sides.

Wenger said afterwards: “It’s not over but we have a 90 per cent chance of finishing second – overall I feel we have done the job well in qualifying.

“We were committed and for parts of the game we were dominant.

“The start of the game was in favour of PSG who had a very strong side. They were a very technical team.

“We weren’t able to press and play higher up the pitch in the first half.

“We dominated in the second half but we didn’t maintain pressure and we paid the price for that.

“We were positive and creative but it was disappointing.”

Referring to the fact Arsenal have been eliminated in the last five years in the Round of 16 after finishing second in their qualifying group he added: “I don’t know if it’s good or bad to finish first or second in the group, but what is disappointing is that we didn’t win the game tonight.

“I have to be careful about not saying we are having a stutter [in November] or it comes back to me.”

He showed sympathy for young Iwobi’s own goal that made the score 2-2 however, explaining matter of factly: “It can’t be helped. He is most disappointed about what happened to him. But he’s got to take it on the chin and come back stronger.”
