Bayer Leverkusen’s regional newspaper, the Rheinische Post, has called the Twitter trolling of Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech an ‘own goal’ by the club’s social media team, while asking whether the experienced Czech international could have simply ignored the tweet. Read German football expert Rosie Tudball’s translation of Tuesday’s Rheinische Post editorial on the row between Bayer Leverkusen’s social media team and experienced Gunners keeper Petr Cech.

Petr Cech makes Bayer Leverkusen look pretty stupid, in a response to a tweet, he not only accuses the club of lacking professionalism, but also of missing values, sportsmanship and lack of fairness.

“These are the values we teach young athletes at Arsenal,” wrote Cech. “It’s sad to see other clubs fail to do that.”

That hurts. Bayer Leverkusen have scored an own goal with the attempted funny tweet.

36-year-old Cech is a great and impeccable sportsman.

He never allowed himself to be part of scandals. As a player of the Czech Republic he has won, among other things, the Champions League and the Europa League.

He has always embodied the values of the sport; his appearance is modest, sober and wise. “If someone like him criticises, it is heard by the whole football world.

The criticism of the world class goalkeeper must hurt Bayer 04 Leverkusen even more, because the club relies on its youth talents. It looks bad when someone like Cech questions the values of the club.

Bayer 04 didn’t want to do anything bad.

The club only wanted to support its long serving goalkeeper Bernd Leno in the fight for the place in goal for Arsenal.

This is commendable and shows that Bayer 04 capitalises cohesion, so it stands for values.

The club will still have to worry about whether the chosen path was the right one. Leverkusen have already apologized. The great Peter Cech could have simply ignored the tweet.

But this sportsman does not ignore these things.
