Santi Cazorla says Arsenal skipper Thomas Vermaelen has been the most impressive player he has seen in the Premier League this season, despite recent criticism of the Belgian’s performances.

Vermaelen and Cazorla have featured regularly for the faultering Gunners this campaign, and former Malaga playmaker Cazorla has liked what he has seen of his team-mate, describing him as one of the best defenders in the world.

Asked to name the player to have impressed him most in England, Cazorla told Four Four Two: “I would have to go for someone in my own team: Thomas Vermaelen.

“I think he’s an incredible player and after playing with him every day, I think he’s one of the best defenders in the world.”
