Vermaelen and Cazorla have featured regularly for the faultering Gunners this campaign, and former Malaga playmaker Cazorla has liked what he has seen of his team-mate, describing him as one of the best defenders in the world.

Asked to name the player to have impressed him most in England, Cazorla told Four Four Two: “I would have to go for someone in my own team: Thomas Vermaelen.

“I think he’s an incredible player and after playing with him every day, I think he’s one of the best defenders in the world.”
