The gathering estimated at between 500 to 1,000 met symbolically in Avenell Road in Islington at 6pm outside the Marble Halls at Highbury.

At the crowd grew it started singing anti-Wenger songs and at 6.30pm started to march to the ground. There were at least two banners with “No New Contract” written in large letters.

Lifelong Arsenal fan from Islington Glenn Allen, a season ticket holder at the club for more than 30 years, was one of the protestors.

He said: “When we finally said a tearful farewell to Highbury, I never would have thought 10 years down the line we’d be standing outside these Marble Halls to demonstrate against the failed promise of the Emirates and the manager who led us there.

“It’s a very sad day to see it come to this, but Wenger has finally got to go.”

The group walked down Gillespie Road peacefully to outside the Armoury continually singing songs against the long-serving Frenchman and chief executive Ivan Gazidis.

Mr Allen added: “‘You’re killing our club’ was the predominant chant,” describing the make-up of the protestors as ‘mostly old-school Arsenal who go to away games’ – adding “bemused new fans in replica shirts we filming us in their mobiles as we walked to the ground, which said it all really.”
