England’s captain led from the front to score twice and hand Gareth Southgate’s team a win in their World Cup opener

Harry Kane insisted England’s late winner in their Group G opener against Tunisia was fully warranted.

The Tottenham Hotspur forward headed home in stoppage time to hand Three Lions a 2-1 win on Monday night.

It completed a brace for Kane, who was captaining England for the first time in a major tournament and also making his World Cup debut.

But Gareth Southgate’s men did not have everything their own way despite going ahead in the 11th minute.

Ashley Young’s corner was headed goalwards by John Stones and although his effort was saved, Kane was there to tap home.

Tunisia hit back, however, after England had squandered numerous chances and made it 1-1 thanks to Ferjani Sassi’s 35th-minute penalty.

At this point it looked like the Three Lions would be frustrated again in the opening game of a major tournament, but Kane popped up in the first minute of stoppage time to head home Harry Maguire’s flick and secure a vital three points.

“It’s massive for us and I’m so proud of the lads because it was tough,” the England captain told BBC One.

“I thought we played really well, especially in the first half and we deserved to be ahead and could have scored a few more.

“I’ve not seen the penalty, but from my point of view it didn’t look like one. Credit to the lads though, as we kept going and that’s what these World Cup games are about – it is about going up until the last second and absolutely buzzing.”

The Spurs striker admitted there had been some nerves present beforehand in the camp, but was full of praise for the team.

Kane added: “I’m really proud of the players. We’ve done a lot of work on the training field and playing last we have seen a lot of games, so we’ve all been itching to play and it was tough.

“The World Cup is tough, especially the first game so it is good to get the nerves out of the way and excitement and then it was about trying to play and I thought we did really well, so I’m so proud of everyone.”
