Football League midfielders Anthony Wordsworth and Alfie Potter will reunite with their former Hawks Athletic team-mates for a charity match next month at Market Road.

Wordsworth, who plays for League One side Southend United and Potter, currently with League Two champions-elect Northampton Town, will be returning to their roots to help raise funds for mental health charity Mind on Sunday May 15.

The match has been organised by Tony Hassan, who ran the successful Hawks team some years ago before going on to scout for Charlton and Millwall.

In their first season as Under-nines, Hawks remained undefeated and conceded only two goals en route to winning their division in the Camden & Islington Youth League.

The club also went on to enjoy continued success in the Islington Midweek League, and further afield in the Enfield & District League, before eventually disbanding.

“It was a mish-mash of kids who didn’t know each other from Adam and we managed to piece them together into a team that dominated for years,” said Hassan.

“This is going to be a good community day. They haven’t all played together as a team since 12 years ago and quite a few of them haven’t seen each other in that time.

“I wanted to do this for something that isn’t highlighted as much as it should be. Mental health is an issue that can affect anybody and having this kind of event will hopefully raise awareness of it.”

There will be a Under-11s six-a-side match at 3pm before the adult game gets under way, followed by a raffle and auction, with prizes including signed Republic of Ireland and Norwich City shirts.
