The Spurs forward has revealed his enormous pride at the prospect of leading the Three Lions out at this summer’s tournament

Gareth Southgate has confirmed Tottenham Hotspur forward Harry Kane will captain England at the 2018 World Cup.

The news was revealed this morning via England’s Twitter account and the Three Lions boss and the Spurs striker both discussed the announcement.

Southgate said: “Last night we told the rest of the players we have named Harry as captain for the World Cup. It is a fantastic honour for Harry and really well deserved.

“He has got outstanding leadership qualities and for me the key for a captain is to set the tone for everything we do. The way we train, the way we prepare and our professionalism and Harry’s an exemplary model of that.

“He is prepared to challenge people and now is a moment in his life where he is prepared to bring that into a team environment and he recognises success as a team is how we are all judged as players.”

Kane discussed the great honour he feels at knowing he will captain his country at this year’s World Cup.

The 24-year-old, who was born in Walthamstow, has worn the armband numerous times under the management of Southgate over the past 12 months, but there was still some debate over whether he, Jordan Henderson or Eric Dier would get it.

Finally it was confirmed this morning ahead of England’s World Cup warm-up games with Nigeria (June 2) and Costa Rice (June 7).

Kane will captain the Three Lions at Wembley in two weekends time and discussed his pride at the news.

He added: “It’s an amazing honour. Obviously you dream of playing for England growing up and to be captain means that little bit more.

“I’m so excited. I’m excited for the World Cup and I can’t wait to be there and experience it.

“To be leading the lads out will be special, but for me nothing changes. I am the same person and the same player and it is about the team and we have just got to do what we can and go as far as we can.”
