Sang Pierre Gomez grabbed a hat-trick as St Aloysius’ College Under-15s survived a scare to win the Bliss Trophy, beating Kingsdale School 6-4 after extra time.

The St Aloysius’ boys appeared to be cruising to victory after Gomez netted twice and Dren Paloi also scored to put them 3-0 up with just five minutes left.

However, they were stunned when their Dulwich opponents pulled back what looked like a consolation goal, quickly added a second and then – despite having a man sent off – took advantage of some slack defending to score a last-gasp equaliser from a corner.

As the teams entered extra time, Kingsdale had the momentum and their 10 men soon scored a fourth goal to complete a remarkable turnaround.

But St Aloysius’ regained their composure and Jendrick Loschner’s well-taken goal levelled the scores again before captain Emmanuel Yeboah made it 5-4.

And Gomez completed his treble to round off the scoring in a hard-fought final and secure the trophy for the north London side.

St Aloysius’ coach Jamie Stewart said: “They’re a tight-knit group of lads who have worked hard to achieve this success. They’re looking forward to playing in the Gazette Schools’ Cup final at the Emirates later this month.”

St Aloysius’ Under-15 basketball team are also celebrating after claiming a place at the England Schools National Conference finals for the first time.

The team triumphed in their two zonal play-off matches, defeating Ravenswood School from Chislehurst 58-36 and then edging out Croydon’s Archbishop La Franc, 44-38.

The St Aloysius’ youngsters now head to the Nottingham Wildcats Arena for the finals on Saturday May 17.
