While some school leavers are impatient to sever all ties with their years of learning straight away, it’s a very different story at Regent Rovers.

Most of the players at the Islington Midweek League club are former students of Regent High School, Somers Town, who are now on the verge of securing their second successive promotion.

Combined with current sixth-form players and staff at the school, the ex-students have taken Division One by storm this season and their 4-2 win over rivals Clocktower has all but sealed a place in the top flight.

Rovers’ player-manager Shaun Banham, who is also the school’s head of PE and set up the team in 2012, feels credit is due to the youngsters, not only for their footballing skills but also for their impressive disciplinary record.

“We have an ethos that we want to play football and don’t get involved in fights or arguing with referees,” said Banham. “We’ve never been given a red card and we don’t get bookings for dissent or anything like that.

“The team was started completely from scratch, but we’ve had two great seasons so far. The players have real pride in being part of the school and representing the area.

“We’ve got a good pool of young players who would do well in adult football and we’d welcome links with a Saturday club who could help to nurture their talent.”

Having gained promotion to Division One in their first season, Rovers are currently second in the table and are also the leading scorers across the entire league.

All their goalscorers against Clocktower were ex-Regent High students, with Cem Gorman netting twice and Simon Siriboe and man of the match Abobaker Eisa also on target.

Rovers were also hoping to reach the first cup final in their short history last night (Wednesday) when they faced Clocktower again in the semi-final of the Jack Walker Shield.

Any Saturday sides interested in setting up a partnership with Rovers can contact the manager on 0751 500 3608 or at
