England’s women made a losing start to their Hockey World League final campaign in New Zealand overnight.

Two late penalty corner strikes saw Germany claim victory in the first game in Pool B, despite a battling display by Danny Kerry’s squad, which includes eight Olympic gold medalists.

Sarah Haycroft and captain Alex Danson went close, while Lily Owsley sent a good chance over the crossbar.

But Charlotte Stapenhorst and Nike Lorenz converted in the final quarter to earn Germany some revenge for losing the Euro Hockey Championship bronze medal match to the English earlier this year.

Amelie Wortmann deflected the first chance of the game wide of Maddie Hinch’s goal on nine minutes, before Haycroft was off-target from Erica Sanders’ cross and Sophie Bray saw a shot blocked.

England’s Amy Tennant was the busier of the two keepers for the first of the first half, making several good saves, before Sanders was denied by Julia Ciupka.

Hinch was at her best to deny Annika Sprink in the third quarter, but Owsley was too high at the other end and Hannah Martin saw a clever flick through her legs just miss the target at the start of the final session.

Danson failed to convert from Ellie Rayer’s cross, before Stapenhorst slammed a corner past Tennant and saw the goal upheld after a review.

Lorenz smashed another corner past Tennant five minutes later and Owsley had a last-minute effort ruled out after a superb run by Martin.

England face Argentina in their next match on Sunday at 7am British time, with their final group game against China on Tuesday.

England: Hinch, Unsworth, Martin, Paige, Danson, Ansley, Bray, Pearne-Webb, McCallin, Owsley, Balsdon. Subs: Haycroft, Toman, Petty, Sanders, Defroand, Tennant.
