Sir Mo Farah ended his glorious track career with a silver medal in the 5,000 metres at the World Championships at London Stadium.

The four-time Olympic champion, having won his third world 10,000m title eight days earlier, saw his hopes of an 11th global title and golden swansong shattered by Ethiopia’s Muktar Edris in a typically thrilling finish.

Farah was welcomed to the start line by another roar from the London Stadium crowd and urged them to keep going with a wave of the hand in the opening paces.

Paul Chelimo tried to stretch things out in the early stages of the race, while Ethiopia’s Selemon Barega and Patrick Tiernan, of Australia, took it in turns to pick up the pace midway through.

Andy Butchart then raced to the front alongside Farah briefly on the penultimate lap, as Yomif Kejelcha and Edris took over at the bell.

Farah was under immense pressure on the back straight as the Ethiopian duo tried to hold him off, with Chelimo also coming through in the final straight.

The 34-year-old Farah was momentarily demoted to fourth place but as Edris held on for a momentous victory in 13.32.79, he dug as deep as he could to pip Chelimo on the line and finish with silver in 13.33.22, before he was left on the track exhausted and heartbroken.

Farah embraced his family and then took a lap of honour to soak up the adulation of his home crowd, but as with his great friend and fellow legend Usain Bolt, he was denied the win he so desperately wanted in his last individual outing.

But when he starts his career as a marathon runner, Farah will be able to reflect on having created an amazing legacy with his four Olympic and six World Championship gold medals.

Quite simply, Farah will go down in history as Britain’s best-ever athlete and one of the greatest the world has ever witnessed.
