Dan Awde’s Olympic dream was shattered as he was forced to pull out of the decathlon after just two events at the Olympic Stadium today.

Awde, who hails from Woodford Green and represents his local athletics club, succumbed to his injury during the long jump.

He had made a flying start in the first event of the day, the 100 metres, storming home in a personal best of 10.71 seconds.

But it was all downhill for Awde after that, as a stuttering start in the long jump went from bad to worse.

After over-stepping the mark and fouling on his first two jumps, he put himself under huge pressure to make amends with his third and final effort.

Awde opted to play it safe with his final jump, his foot leaving the runway a whopping 26cm behind the mark.

He recorded a modest 6.83m but as he struggled to his feet it became clear he had sustained an injury to his left knee.

Adwe, who was eyeing a top ten finish in the 10-discipline event, dropped from seventh to 19th overall in the decathlon standings, but the long jump would prove his final action of London 2012.

“I’ve had a flare up of patella tendinitis and if I continued it would probably rupture,” Awde said.

“It’s been a real rollercoaster ride. We try to find solutions to it. It works for about a week, find another solution and that works for about a week.

“If you spoke to me at the start of the year I wouldn’t have expected to be here in the first place, it’s been a real bane of my life for the last two years.

“I’m in the best shape of my life. I was so ready for this to put on a good show, entertain the crowd. I was ready but my knee wasn’t.

Without being too arrogant, if the pain is enough to make me stop and pull out of my home Olympics, then it’s too painful.”
