For Lee Travis, painting was “an absorbing and sometimes painful voyage of discovery”.

His late works, created on frequent visits to the Normandy countryside, are abstract images deriving from a fascination with plant forms and the microscopic condition of flowers and plants.

An exhibition of these intriguing paintings opens tomorrow (Friday) at the Highgate Gallery. Travis, who lived in Archway, trained as a textile designer and freelance work included designs for Liberty.

His output of personal drawings and paintings was prolific and his showing record included the Pond Square Gallery and the RA Summer Exhibition, both in 1992. Travis died of a heart attack in 2012, a year after starting to make the large works in this exhibition.

Until March 24 at 11 South Grove N6, Tuesday to Friday 1pm to 5pm, Saturday 11am to 4pm, Sunday 11am to 5pm.
