Artists are putting their work on the line for an exhibition with a difference at Jealous East.
Half of the artists have donated artworks, while the other half will be manipulating the donated pieces, in an attempt to explore human vulnerabilities and see how artists fare with relinquishing control of their work.
‘Face Value 2: Identity changed by the potentially devastating effects of others’ will donate all proceeds from sale of works to the Katie Piper Foundation, which aims to help people live with burns and scars.
One of the artists participating, Diana Ali, said: “Art has the power to expose issues we’re scared to talk about. As artists we become to precious or secretive with our work - suffering from the old fear of ‘is it good enough?’ To manipulate someone else’s work, or to have one’s work reinterpreted by another, communicates a sense of trust and opennes. My work often inovlves taking other peoples’ stories and bringing them alive through alternative and fictional narratives, so this exhibition was a perfect opportunity to do that.”
There are some big names on the list, which includes Turner Prize winners and nominees and Young British Artists. Mark Wallinger, Sarah Lucas, Gavin Turk, Jake & DInos Chapman, Mark Titchner, Ben Eine, Camille Walala and Patrick Hughes are just a few of the impressive lineup of collaborating artists.
“So many lives have been changed by other people, in both positive and negative ways,” says curator and artist Gary Mansfield. “The drive behind this exhibition is to express the impact that one person can have on another.
“This exhibition is a way of exploring human vulnerabilities and seeing how the artists react to having someone else take control of their work. We’ve got some exciting collaborations going on that many of the artists don’t even know about – most of those involved haven’t got a clue who’s working on their piece.”
Face Value 2 runs March 9-17 at Jealous East, 53 Curtain Road, Shoreditch, EC2A 3TP
