Everyday millions of aspiring musicians upload videos of themselves online with dreams of fame and fortune but for one singer, stardom could soon become reality.

Sophie Blackburn of Camden Road, Holloway, entered the MasterCard Something for the Fans competition with a soulful rendition of Labrinth’s 2011 hit Let the Sunshine in January.

Less than three weeks later she was in the studio with the man himself recording a duet of his number two smash Earthquake for the Brit awards 2012.

The 24-year-old singer-songwriter said “The whole experience was totally surreal. I was so overwhelmed; I spent the day thinking ‘I can’t believe it, this is crazy’.

“When I arrived they told me he probably couldn’t make it because of the snow. So I went into the studio and was just playing by myself for a while when the doors opened and he walked in. It was amazing.”

Sophie was quick to praise the 22-year-old producer from Hackney, she said: “He was so lovely, charming and sweet but it made it so much more nerve racking to perform his own music with him.”

Labrinth, who was part of the panel which chose Sophie as the winner, was impressed by her style. He said: “I’m a total music geek, I love trying new things and am always thinking about the next way I can express myself.

“Singing with a fan is a totally new experience for me and it was amazing to sing with Sophie and to hear the fresh sound she brings to my songs.’’

In addition to the duet, Sophie also won a pair of tickets for The BRIT Awards and an invitation to the official after party.

The British-born musician grew up in Munich and has only been living in Islington for a year – but it seems the borough’s charms have already taken effect. “I love it here,” she professes, “I don’t think I’ll ever leave.”

Sophie, who is still unsigned and works two jobs to support her budding music career, is currently gigging and writing in Islington.

Her duet with Labrinth will be aired on ITV as part of a Mastercard sponsorship advert during The BRIT Awards on February 21.
