The chairman of Islington Veterans Association admitted he was disappointed that no Australian or New Zealander was present for yesterday’s Anzac Day remembrance.
The service, at Islington Green, was held to honour those who died in Gallipoli in the First World War.
Dennis Sharrocks said: “The turnout within the association was fine, but we were a bit disappointed that no Australian or New Zealander turned up, as we usually ask one person to lay the wreath. A lady did turn up right at the end, but it was too late.”
He added: “Anzac Day is something that gets forgotten about compared to Remembrance in November. Gallipoli was a big loss of life for Australia and New Zealand, who were fighting on behalf of the British.
“There’s no Islington link to Anzac Day, but it’s still important for us to remember. We make a big point of flying the Commonwealth flag and making sure the mayor – or in this case deputy mayor Cllr Una O’Halloran – is present.”
