Footballer Laurie Cunningham is one of 10 nominees in this year’s Islington People’s Plaque awards.

Cunningham, the first black player to represent England at any level in 1977, was born in Archway and grew up in Finsbury Park. His nomination comes just weeks after English Heritage unveiled a blue plaque at his former home in Lancaster Road.

The annual Islington’s People’s Plaque awards commemorate significant people, places, and events in the borough.

Cllr Kaya Comer-Schwartz, Islington’s community development leader, said: “Like us, local residents take enormous pride in Islington and the people and places that have fashioned the character of the borough we know and love today.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to vote for your local heroes – places, people, and events, past and present – and see that their contribution to our shared heritage is properly celebrated.”

There are 10 nominees and the three people or places with the most votes will get a plaque. They are: Elsie Chamberlain (1910–1991), Richard Cloudesley (c1465-1517), Laurie Cunningham (1956-1989), Finsbury Park Empire, Derek Jarman (1942-1994), Thomas Lord (1755-1832), Richard Price (1723-1791), Red Bull Playhouse, Harley Sherlock MBE (1925-2014) and PC Alfred Smith (1880-1917).
