Britain’s favourite D-day veteran was serenaded by an Islington trio on his secret trip to Normandy last week.

Bernard Jordan, 89, shot to fame last week when he snook out of a care home in Hove to attend a special ceremony for the 70th anniversary of D-day.

And it was 1920s themed harmony group Candy Girls, formed by Barnsbury resident Elkie Jeffery, who had the pleasure of singing to the former Royal Navy Lieutenant on the ferry to the French coast.

Miss Jeffery, 30, of Arundel Square, said: “It was amazing, we were doing shows three times a day on the cruise.

“It was incredibly moving, the veterans were dancing with us and we were welling up and so were they – they were such lovely gentlemen.

“They were typical cheeky chappy soldiers, saying things like ‘if I were 50 years younger’, they were a delight.”

All three of the Candy Girls are full time singers and singing teachers. Go to the-candy-girls.co.uk for more information.
