Celebrated film director and LGBT activist Derek Jarman was announced as an Islington people’s plaque winner today.

The annual public vote honours three dead people or places that enhanced the Islington community. Over 12,000 people voted from a shortlist of 10.

Mr Jarman, who died aged 52 in 1994, lived in Liverpool Road and was an advocate for gay rights and HIV/AIDS awareness.

Pc Alfred Smith (1880-1917) was also nominated for his life-saving heroics in a First World War bomb raid in Central Street, Finsbury.

Finsbury Park Empire (1910-1960) rounded off the list as one of London’s most popular variety theatres. It is now the Vaudville Court housing block in St Thomas’s Road.

The plaques will be unveiled on dates to be confirmed next year.
