An armed forces flag was hoisted above Islington Town Hall on Monday as part of the a week of military-based festivities.
In honour of Armed Forces week, which runs until Sunday, Islington Green War memorial will be officially re-opened on Saturday in a multi-faith ceremony. The monument had been closed for repairs.
Veterans, reservists and Scouts will gather from 10.45am to pay their respects to those who died in the First World War, which started a century ago. Cllr Richard Watts, leader of Islington Council, said: “Islington is proud to fly the Armed Forces Day flag as a symbol of our strong ties with the services – including through our community covenant. We look forward to welcoming young and old to this year’s Armed Forces Day ceremony, and the rededication of our war memorial.” The ceremony will be followed by a picnic in the park event.
