Underground bosses announced a £20million plan to make Angel a “super station”.

The improvements to take it “into the 21st century” included an escalator system, booking office and removal of the central island platform.

It was a response to the commercial development of Islington, which saw the number of passengers using the small station double.

Meanwhile, Arsenal fans were given the chance to salute the club’s League Cup winners after all.

The Gunners turned down an Islington Town Hall parade after the 2-1 Wembley win over Liverpool because the team was still competing for the championship. But the club relented after its title hopes faded, and announced a civic reception.

In other news, Islington was set to appoint its first black mayor. Valda James was picked by fellow Labour councillors as deputy mayor for 1987/88. By tradition, the deputy takes over as Mayor the following year.
