A lorry carrying chemicals overturned at Archway roundabout after crashing into a stationary taxi. Police officers were overcome by fumes from spilled chemicals.
The crash followed publication of an Islington Council survey naming the roundabout as the borough’s worst accident spot, with 58 accidents between 1983 and 1985.
The lorry was driven by Leonard Bennion, of Middlesex. It was carrying metal and plastic containers full of solvents used in printing.
Mr Bennion stayed overnight in hospital but the cab driver, 59-year-old Raymond Maxey, of North Road, Holloway, only suffered a cut to his head. The lorry also hit Robert Pannyi, of St John’s Way, as it came to a halt against the fence. But he only suffered a graze.
