Privately run Aberdeen Park in Highbury became the first road in Islington where wheel clamping operated.
Security firm Chubb Wardens was employed to “protect” the road’s parking spaces for the Aberdeen Park Maintenance Company.
And Islington Council admitted it could do nothing to stop it. One of the early victims was shop manager Des Kinsella, 30, who faced a £50 fine (£127 today).
In other news, two men were accused of stabbing a 45-year-old man to death with a three-foot ornamental Indian sword. The man was killed in Warltersville Road, Hornsey Rise.
A 23-year-old man from Highbury and 21-year-old man from Stoke Newington were charged.
Meanwhile, campaigning mum Sandra Ellis was nursing her son back to health after he fractured his skull in a fall from a wall.
She was lobbying Islington Council to knock down the wall, near her home in Finsbury Park’s Andover Estate.
