Islington Green’s iconic Collins Music Hall appeared to have been saved from closure.
There had been speculation about its future after a planning application was listed with London County Council to convert it into a warehouse and office.
But the famous venue seemed to have been saved when proprietor Lew Lake entered negotiations showman John Collins (no relation to the original owner).
He had sent an urgent telegram to Mr Lake, saying: “Please do not, repeat not, part with music hall until you hear from my solicitor re purchase.”
As it turned out, the hall closed a year later in 1958. Today, it’s occupied by a Waterstones bookshop.
Meanwhile, there was an outbreak of influenza in Islington’s schools.
It was first reported in Newington Green, but spread throught the borough, causing “large-scale” absences.
Fortunately, the outbreak was reported to have been “mild”.
