A Caxton House Community Centre day out ended in tragedy when one of its members was killed on the way back from Brighton.

Elizabeth Tuhill, of Yonge Park, Finsbury Park, was a member of the Hornsey Rise centre’s Darby and Joan Club. About 40 had gone for the day out in the seaside town.

Elizabeth, 82, had been alighting from the coach in Surrey when she was hit by a car.

Another passenger, 83-year-old Mary Heaps, was also involved in the accident and had to be treated for shock.

Meanwhile, a 71-year-old nightwatchman was found dead on a building site in Boothby Road, Archway.

The body of Charles Woodward, of Hargrave Park, Upper Holloway, was found when labourer Arthur Walding arrived at work at 7am. A gas fire had been left on.

Coroner W. Purchase recorded an open verdict at St Pancras Coroner’s Court, saying: “Just what he did or how he managed it, I don’t know.”
