A Holloway family was tragically wiped out on a trip to the seaside 60 years ago this week.
Albert “Bert” Chivers – who sold morning newspapers outside Holloway Road station and evening papers on Holloway Road’s junction with Caledonian Road – along with his wife Doris, eight-year-old daughter Valerie and four-year-old son Reginald, all died after the family car collided with a double-decker bus in Herne Bay.
Four-year-old Patricia, Reginald’s twin, survived her injuries.
The family, who lived at 7, Loraine Road, had left the eldest child, 16-year-old Ronald, at home.
Following the tragedy, he went into the care of his uncle Robert.
