One hundred Islington people pledged to will their eyes after being moved by a play about blindness.
After watching “The Gift” at the town hall, they volunteered to leave their eyes to the Royal Eye Hospital.
The play’s plot focused on a woman with permanent blindness, whose sight was saved by a corneal graft from a healthy eye.
The Gazette enthused: “The response was overwhelming. A table in the foyer bearing bequest forms was surrounded by people, young and old and of both sexes, eager to pledge their eyes to the cause.”
In other news, two have-a-go heroes were praised by a court for detaining a man who snatched a woman’s bag in Hanley Road, Hornsey Rise.
Ice cream vendor William Jones and another man “took a chance and ran” after the culprit, Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court heard.
Magistrate Seymour Collins said: “On behalf of the community, I would like to thank you.”
