Financial difficulties at Islington Boys’ Club, in Parkurst Road, were said to have caused the termination of 31-year-old Mr W.C. Jennings appointment as full-time leader.
Mr Jennings, unaware of what was going on, received an unpleasant shock when news of the Council of Management’s (CoM) decision arrived with Tuesday morning’s mail at his Camden Road home.
A letter signed by Mr J.A. Howard, honorary secretary of the club, informed him at a CoM emergency meeting that in view of the present state of finances they could not pay the leader’s salary.
• Two men were honoured by the Mount Pleasant Post Office on Monday after they rescued children from drowning. Mr C. Sainsbury, a cleaner, aged 59, was walking along the front at Thorpe Bay with his wife when he heard shouting and dived in to rescue a girl. Mr A. Rudiger was walking along by the Lea Navigation Cut when he also saved a boy from drowning.
