My heart goes out to brave mum Kerry Dawson this week as she reels from the decision of top judges to reduce the sentence of the teenager who brutally maimed her son.

On a summer’s day in June last year Ce-jay Furzer pulled open a flick knife and stabbed Kerry’s oldest child Tyler Dawson, 18, in the groin after following him from a shopping mall.

Kerry’s blood turned cold as she got the phone call to tell her what had happened.

Months later I was in court as Furzer pleaded guilty to the attack. Police had meticulously gathered CCTV evidence against him. Tyler watched from his wheelchair.

But Kerry was ill that day, the months and months of agonising stress and worry finally getting the better of her.

She told me she had barely slept or eaten as she watched over Tyler’s bedside in hospital. Every time she left she was unsure if he would be alive when she went back again.

I have seen graphic images of Tyler’s horrific injuries - the pictures of him skeletally thin in hospital with a turned-up pyjama leg where his right leg once was. The tubes running into his nose.

I cannot imagine what Kerry and the rest of her family suffered in those dark days. And Tyler himself will live with crippling injuries for the rest of his life.

And for all of this devastation another young man will serve less than four years behind bars. It is a sentence I can only describe as absurd.

What message does this send to other young men in Barking and Dagenham who carry knives? And what justice for Tyler and his mum? None at all.
