Islington Faiths Forum has been given the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service: the most prestigious honour a volunteer group can get.
As its name suggests, the forum works to promote community cohesion among different backgrounds.
An example of its work was holding the “Islington Great Get Together” community day at Muslim Welfare House in Finsbury Park last year.
Tragically, two days later, the same site was targeted by terrorist Darren Osborne, who ploughed a van into worshippers and murdered one: Makram Ali.
Elizabeth Chappell, chair of the Faiths Forum, said: “Inter faith work goes on behind the scenes, day in day out, and does not usually hit the headlines.
“From the heartfelt response to last year’s callous attack on Muslims in Finsbury Park, the importance of this work was shown as well as its substantial contribution to community cohesion in Islington. We very much welcome the Queen’s Award as it recognises and supports our vital work in the borough.”
The forum is holding another Great Get Together at Muslim Welfare House on June 23: 2pm to 3.30pm.
