Angel Central bosses want to remove the famous wings sculpture – and replace it with a bridge.
Last year, Angel Central proposed to swap the sculpture with a gold statue of Islington icons Spandau Ballet.
That was an April Fool’s joke. But the new plans, announced today as part of an “incredible” £8million refurbishment of the shopping centre, appear more serious.
In an application submitted to Islington Council, planning agent CBRE disowns the sculpture, saying it makes the space “feel enclosed”.
The submission adds: “The external appearance of the shopping centre does not reflect the quality of the retailers who occupy the centre and is dated.”
The focal point of the project is a bridge that will link both sides of the centre’s mezzanine. There will also be more space for three new restaurants, as well as better lighting and upgraded flooring.
Centre manager Lynne Glover said: “This is an incredible project that will completely transform Angel Central into a leading retail and leisure destination for north London.
“I am thrilled to be part of this new chapter for Angel Central, and I’m sure the Islington community is excited to see the result of this incredible new vision for the area.”
If planning permission is obtained, Angel Central aims to start work in January.
