Every week, we take to the streets to unearth something being manufactured or produced right here in Islington. This week, we found a pub brewing its own ale in the cellar.
A storm is going down in Essex Road. The Hops and Glory pub is selling its own beer – and punters can’t stop getting their slurpy on.
The Hops and Glory Pale Ale (£5 a pint) is brewed in the cellar. And with its fresh, tropical citrus-based flavour, it’s a regular sell-out.
Pub owner Durham Atkinson says: “It’s a relatively new project. We brew on Saturday mornings and then sell it in the pub.
“It’s really enjoyable. We’ve been doing it for a year-and-a-half and the beer sells out all the time.”
It has been so successful that Durham is already looking towards larger-scale brewing.
He adds: “Eventually we want to open a brewery off-site to increase production 10 times over.”
